Lesson Plan: Dividing Rectangles into Same-Sized Squares Mathematics • 2nd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide rectangles into squares of the same size by creating rows and columns and then counting to find the total number of squares.


Students will be able to

  • cover a rectangle using squares organized in rows and columns,
  • count the number of squares using the rows or columns,
  • draw a rectangle divided into a number of equal squares.


Students should already be familiar with

  • making 2D shapes from other shapes.


Students will not cover

  • multiplication using arrays.
