Lesson Plan: Polynomial Equations Mathematics • 10th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use different strategies for solving polynomial equations of degrees greater than two.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- factor polynomials and solve polynomial equations using
- the greatest common factor of a polynomials’ terms,
- difference between two squares,
- sum and difference of two cubes,
- perfect square binomials and trinomials,
- factoring by grouping,
- rewriting a polynomial to have a quadratic form,
- apply these strategies for solving polynomial equations to solve real-world problems and consider the physical restrictions on the solutions.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- solving quadratic equations,
- determining the number of roots of a quadratic equation,
- the zero product property,
- factoring by grouping,
- factoring a polynomial by finding the greatest common factor of its terms.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- algebraic division,
- synthetic division,
- the remainder theorem.
