Lesson Plan: Dividing Decimals Mathematics • 6th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the best methods of solving problems involving the division of decimals, check that the division is correct, and find quotients involving dividends expressed up to four decimal places or divisors expressed up to three decimal places.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- determine whether to use long division, estimation, or some other method to solve problems in which a decimal is being divided,
- use multiplication and estimation to check the accuracy of quotients obtained by dividing decimals,
- find quotients when dividends are expressed using up to four decimal places,
- find quotients when divisors are expressed using up to three decimal places,
- solve two-step problems involving division with dividends expressed using up to four decimal places.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplication facts up to and related division facts,
- solving and checking problems involving the division of a decimal expressed to the tenths or hundredths place.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing whole numbers,
- quotients, divisors, or dividends with more than four decimal places.
