Lesson Plan: Cells: Cell Structure
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the basic structure of a cell, name parts of a plant cell, and describe their functions.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that the cell is the basic unit that makes up tissues, organs, organ systems, and, ultimately, organisms,
- use a microscope to examine plant cells,
- name parts of plant cells,
- describe the functions of parts of plant cells.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the idea that living things such as animals and plants are complex organisms and that many parts work together to perform a function,
- the basic parts of a plant, such as the roots, the stem, and the leaves,
- some major organs in animals, such as the stomach and the intestines.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- parts of the cell other than the nucleus, cytoplasm, plasma membrane, sap vacuole, small vacuoles, chloroplasts, and cell wall.
