Lesson Plan: Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use models, such as tape diagrams and number lines, to subtract a fraction less than one from a fraction greater than one.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- model subtraction with bar models and number lines,
- subtract a proper fraction from an improper fraction,
- subtract a proper fraction from a mixed number,
- subtract a proper fraction from a whole number,
- break apart fractions to subtract when necessary.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- subtracting fractions within one whole,
- writing fractions equivalent to whole numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- subtracting mixed numbers,
- simplifying fractions.
