Lesson Plan: Area and Perimeter of Composite Rectilinear Shapes Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the area and perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- determine the area and perimeter of a composite rectilinear shape,
- determine missing side lengths of a composite rectilinear shape and then determine its area and perimeter,
- determine missing side lengths of a composite rectilinear shape given its area or perimeter,
- identify composite rectilinear shapes with equal area or perimeter.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- how to multiply to find the area of a rectangle,
- how to add to find the perimeter of a closed figure,
- basic multiplication facts.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- shapes that are not rectilinear,
- customary measures of length and area,
- the notations cm2 and m2,
- products greater than .
