Lesson Plan: Maps: Types and Tools
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use map tools to name and locate features on a map and identify the purpose of different types of maps.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define map,
- name and locate features on a map using a key,
- use a compass rose to give locations of places on map,
- identify bodies of water and land on a map,
- identify the weather using a weather map,
- identify and compare the features on different types of maps,
- identify and compare the purpose of different types of maps.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west,
- rectangles and spheres.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the locations of the equator, poles, or continents on a map,
- directions other than north, south, east, and west.
