Lesson Plan: Number Operations in Scientific Notation Mathematics • 8th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to perform arithmetic operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on numbers given in scientific notation,
- evaluate combinations of operations applied to numbers given in scientific notation,
- solve word problems using number operations where the numbers are given in scientific notation.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- integer exponents,
- numbers given in scientific notation,
- converting between normal numbers and scientific notation.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- operations other than addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division,
- roots and fractional exponents.
