Lesson Plan: Doped Semiconductors Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the effect that doping a semiconductor has on its electrical properties.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe how adding donor and acceptor ions to a pure semiconductor’s atomic lattice produces free electrons and vacancies in the lattice,
  • relate the free electron and vacancy densities of a doped semiconductor using the formula 𝑝𝑛=π‘›οƒοŠ¨,
  • relate the free electron and vacancy densities to the acceptor and donor ion densities in a doped semiconductor using the formulas 𝑝=𝑁+𝑛=π‘›π‘οŒ οŠ±οƒοŠ¨οŒ£οŠ°,
  • relate the free electron and vacancy densities to the acceptor and donor ion densities in a doped semiconductor using the formulas 𝑛=𝑛𝑁=𝑝+π‘οƒοŠ¨οŒ οŠ±οŒ£οŠ°.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • pure semiconductors.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • semiconductor junctions.
