Lesson Plan: Domain and Range of a Function Mathematics • 9th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify the domain and range of functions from their equations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall the definitions of the domain and the range of a function,
  • identify the ordered pairs of a function given the domain, range, and equation of the function,
  • identify the range of a function given the domain and the equation of the function,
  • identify the domain of a function given the range and equation of the function,
  • identify the domain and range of a discrete function and mapping diagram,
  • identify the domain and range of a function given a graph of the function,
  • identify the domain and range of a function given the equation of the function.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • identifying, representing, and recognizing functions from descriptions, arrow diagrams, and graphs,
  • function notation,
  • set notation,
  • representing relations,
  • evaluating functions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • piecewise functions,
  • rational functions.
