Lesson Plan: Deformation of Springs Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the formula 𝐹 = 𝑘𝑥 to calculate the deformation of a spring, defining the spring constant as the resistance of a spring to deformation.


Students will be able to

  • use the formula force exerted on a deformed spring = spring constant × change in the length of the spring.


Students should already be familiar with

  • Newton’s second law of motion,
  • the normal reaction force.


Students will not cover

  • oscillations of springs.
