Lesson Plan: Categories of Energy Science • First Year of Preparatory School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to distinguish between categories of energy and understand how these categories depend on the properties of objects.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that the term energy is associated with some properties of objects,
- recognize that the term energy can refer to more than one such property,
- recognize that energy is a quantity, so it can increase, decrease, or not change.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the names of the following energy categories that are used to describe properties of objects: kinetic, gravitational potential, thermal, magnetic, and chemical,
- some of the properties of objects that are associated with each of the energy categories used.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- units of energy,
- calculations using energy,
- the term work,
- transfers of energy,
- conservation of energy,
- microstructures of objects that correspond to magnetic, chemical, elastic potential, or thermal energy,
- the term system.
