Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the area of rectangles using repeated addition or skip counting,
- connect multiplication arrays to rectangles made up of unit squares,
- use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle,
- use the distributive property to find the area of a rectangle,
- solve problems involving areas of rectangles.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- repeated addition and skip counting,
- counting unit squares to find the area,
- multiplication facts through ,
- comparing and ordering whole numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the formula for the area of a rectangle,
- polygons other than rectangles,
- measuring area in units other than square units.
