Lesson Plan: Making One US Dollar

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write one dollar as $1.00 and find combinations of coins equal to one dollar.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that 100 cents is equal to one dollar,
  • make one dollar using nickels,
  • make one dollar using dimes,
  • make one dollar using quarters,
  • recognize a group of coins that make one dollar.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • recognizing coins,
  • ordering coins from the highest value to lowest value and skip counting to find the total.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • making amounts other than 1 dollar,
  • the dollar bill.
