This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to apply derivatives to real-world problems to find the maximum and the minimum values of a function under certain conditions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • express a given real-world problem as a function that must be optimized,
  • find the absolute extrema (minimum and/or maximum) of a function and understand how this relates to the real-world problem represented by the function.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • differentiation,
  • finding critical points,
  • the second derivative test,
  • local extrema and absolute extrema,
  • endpoints of a function over an interval.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • open intervals,
  • infimum and supremum,
  • integration.
