Lesson Plan: Optimization: Applications on Extreme Values Mathematics • Third Year of Secondary School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to apply derivatives to real-world problems to find the maximum and the minimum values of a function under certain conditions.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- express a given real-world problem as a function that must be optimized,
- find the absolute extrema (minimum and/or maximum) of a function and understand how this relates to the real-world problem represented by the function.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- differentiation,
- finding critical points,
- the second derivative test,
- local extrema and absolute extrema,
- endpoints of a function over an interval.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- open intervals,
- infimum and supremum,
- integration.
