Lesson Plan: Properties of Matter
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe, classify, and sort matter based on its properties.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space,
- understand that all matter has traits that are called properties,
- describe properties such as color, shape, size, weight, texture, hardness, magnetism, and flexibility,
- classify and sort materials based on their properties.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the idea that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- properties not listed in the objectives such as solubility in water and conduction of electricity and heat.
