Lesson Plan: Fractions and Decimals with Money: USD Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write amounts of money as fractions and decimals and model tenths and hundreds with dimes and pennies.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize 1 penny as 1 cent, 1100th of a dollar, and $0.01,
  • recognize 1 nickel as 5 cents, 5100th of a dollar, and $0.05,
  • recognize 1 dime as 10 cents, 110th of a dollar, and $0.10,
  • recognize 1 quarter as 25 cents, 14 of a dollar, and $0.25,
  • recognize half a dollar as 50 cents, 12 of a dollar, and $0.50,
  • record amounts of money using decimal notation, recognizing that 100 cents is written as 1 dollar.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • recognizing coins and identifying their monetary value,
  • recognizing that there are 100 cents in 1 dollar.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • adding and subtracting money with decimal notation.
