Lesson Plan: Loci in the Complex Plane Using the Argument Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the loci of a complex equation in the complex plane defined in terms of the argument.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use the argument in the same way that we use the modulus to define loci in the complex plane,
  • interpret the loci of points that satisfy certain equations and investigate their properties,
  • describe loci of points satisfying arg(𝑧𝑧)=𝜃,
  • describe loci of points satisfying arg𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧=𝜃.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • complex numbers, in polar and Cartesian form,
  • the complex plane.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • transformations of the complex plane,
  • Möbius transformations.
