Lesson Plan: Health and Safety
This lesson plan includes the objectives and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify common laboratory hazards, recognize international symbols for different hazards, and minimize the risk when performing experiments.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- identify and recognize hazard symbols for both chemicals and pieces of laboratory equipment,
- understand which precautions should be taken based on the hazard symbol,
- explain the difference between a hazard and a risk,
- describe the use of personal protective equipment when performing an experiment,
- identify safety equipment or measures for particular hazards or experiments,
- identify unsafe practice in descriptions or illustrations,
- describe the correct procedure if a fire is discovered and how to evacuate,
- identify fire hazards and describe measures to prevent fires in a laboratory.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- different types of fire extinguishers or how to use them.
