Lesson Plan: Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids Chemistry • 7th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe, compare, and explain the physical and chemical properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the location of the three classes of elements in the periodic table in order to illustrate a stepped line that divides metals from nonmetals,
  • list the general properties of metals and nonmetals and acknowledging common exceptions,
  • link the properties of metals and nonmetals to their uses,
  • use the particle model of solids to illustrate the properties of ductility and malleability in metals,
  • recall the positions of the metalloids on the periodic table,
  • compare the properties of metalloids to neighboring metals and nonmetals in order to understand the application of metalloids for their uses.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the particle model of matter.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • metallic bonding or alloying.
