This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to estimate the 𝑛th root of a number using number lines.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that if 0<𝑎<𝑥<𝑏 with 𝑛 being a positive integer (or 𝑎<𝑥<𝑏<0 with 𝑛 being odd), then the 𝑛th root of 𝑥 lies between 𝑎 and 𝑏,
  • locate the 𝑛th root of a number on a number line showing the two consecutive integers 𝑎 and 𝑏 such that 0<𝑎<𝑥<𝑏 (or 𝑎<𝑥<𝑏<0 with 𝑛 being odd).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝑛th roots as inverse operations of raising to the 𝑛th power.
