Lesson Plan: Estimating Radicals Using Number Lines Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to estimate the 𝑛th root of a number using number lines.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that if 0<π‘Ž<π‘₯<π‘οŠοŠ with 𝑛 being a positive integer (or π‘Ž<π‘₯<𝑏<0 with 𝑛 being odd), then the 𝑛th root of π‘₯ lies between π‘Ž and 𝑏,
  • locate the 𝑛th root of a number on a number line showing the two consecutive integers π‘Ž and 𝑏 such that 0<π‘Ž<π‘₯<π‘οŠοŠ (or π‘Ž<π‘₯<𝑏<0 with 𝑛 being odd).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝑛th roots as inverse operations of raising to the 𝑛th power.
