Objectives

Students will be able to

  • model word problems with part–whole bar models,
  • write an equation to find the missing part or whole in a bar model,
  • decide whether to use addition or subtraction to solve a word problem,
  • solve one-step word problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • writing addition and subtraction equations,
  • adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • numbers over 100,
  • two-step word problems.
