Lesson Plan: Making a Whole: Halves, Thirds, and Quarters Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe, name, and create whole shapes and their fractional parts using halves, thirds, and quarters (fourths).
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use fraction language to describe how a whole has been equally split,
- say how many fractional parts are in a whole,
- combine parts with the same denominator to make one whole,
- identify the whole when given a part.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- unit fractions for halves, thirds, and quarters,
- halves, thirds, and quarters (fourths) of shapes in various representations,
- nonunit fractions for halves, thirds, and quarters.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- wholes made of fractions with different denominators,
- fractions on number lines,
- comparing fractions.
