Lesson Plan: Water Habitats
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify different water-based habitats and describe their importance for living things.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand what habitats are and why they are important for living things,
- identify and compare different types of water habitats, including oceans, rivers, streams, wetlands, and ponds,
- recognize the difference between a marsh and a swamp,
- understand some of the ways living things have adapted to water-based habitats,
- understand what is meant by the term diverse with respect to water habitats.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the idea that living things need nutrients, water, and space to live and to grow,
- the names of some common animals,
- the appearances of some common animals.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- land habitats.
