Lesson Plan: Slope of a Line through Two Points Mathematics • 8th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the slope of a line that goes through two given points.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the relationship between the slope of a line and the points that lie on the line,
  • identify whether a line has a positive or negative slope from its graph,
  • understand that the slope of a line is equal to the change in the 𝑦-coordinate divided by the change in the 𝑥-coordinate,
  • find the slope of a line when given two points that lie on it,
  • understand that the slope of the line connecting two points with the same 𝑦-coordinate is zero,
  • understand that the slope of the line connecting two points with the same 𝑥-coordinate is undefined,
  • find a missing coordinate value for a point that lies on a line when given another point and the slope of the line,
  • understand that if a group of points are collinear, then the slope between any two of the points is the same,
  • solving real-life application problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • coordinates,
  • linear relations of the form 𝑎𝑥+𝑏𝑦=𝑐,
  • graphing linear relations of the form 𝑎𝑥+𝑏𝑦=𝑐 using ordered pairs or a table of values,
  • the equations of vertical and horizontal lines.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the equation of a line (in any form),
  • the relationship between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines,
  • trigonometry.
