Lesson Plan: Articles English
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the definite and indefinite articles to talk about school life and issues affecting students.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use the indefinite article correctly in context, depending on whether the following word begins with a consonant or a vowel sound,
- use the indefinite article with singular countable nouns and the definite article with singular and plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns,
- use the indefinite article to introduce a noun for the first time and the definite article to refer to the same noun for a second time,
- understand that the indefinite article often refers to things in general, while the definite article refers to things specifically,
- understand that an article is not used when speaking about things in general with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns (e.g., Crime is a problem nowadays),
- understand when to use the definite article or no article in certain place names,
- understand that articles follow the same rules when used before compound nouns (e.g., A swimming pool) and noun phrases (e.g., An angry teacher).
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- countable and uncountable nouns,
- determiners (quantifiers: some, any, much, and many),
- possessive determiners (my, their, etc.).
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- other determiners (all, several, lots of, etc.).
