Lesson Plan: Reproduction as a Life Process Biology • Third Year of Secondary School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to outline the significance of reproduction for organisms and when it occurs in a lifecycle and describe two different reproductive strategies with relevant examples.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- outline the importance of reproduction as a key function of organisms,
- state that reproduction usually follows a period of growth by an organism,
- state that reproduction is essential for the continuity of a species and failure to reproduce leads to extinction,
- describe two distinct reproductive strategies among organisms: those with a short lifespan produce many offspring (e.g., weeds and insects) and those with a long lifespan produce fewer offspring (e.g., primates).
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the key life processes for all organisms: respiration, nutrition, excretion, sensitivity, and reproduction,
- the concept that mammals look after their young.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- types of reproduction (sexual and asexual),
- the terms r-species and k-species or their significance for population dynamics.
