Lesson Plan: Variation
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define variation and distinguish between variation caused by genes and variation caused by the environment.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define variation as the difference between the characteristics of organisms,
- recall that all living things show variation in their characteristics,
- understand that inherited variation occurs due to differences in genes and some variation occurs due to differences in environments,
- distinguish between variation that is influenced by genetics, variation that is influenced by the environment, and variation that is influenced by both.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- offspring inheriting characteristics from their parents.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- details of gene expression,
- continuous and discontinuous variations.
