Lesson Plan: Unit Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Quarters Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to draw, recognize, and write unit fractions to name one-half, one-third, and one-quarter of a shape using fraction notation.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that 1𝑏 means 1 out of a total of 𝑏,
  • write a unit fraction for a half, a quarter, or a third,
  • create a fraction that shows a half, a quarter, or a third,
  • use the terms numerator and denominator correctly.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • finding halves, quarters, and thirds of shapes,
  • the terms half, quarter, third, part, and whole,
  • describing fractions as equal parts of a whole.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • nonunit fractions,
  • fractions of amounts,
  • equivalent fractions.
