Lesson Plan: Seed Dispersal and Germination
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recall some processes of seed dispersal and describe the main stages in the germination of a seed.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall that seed dispersal is important to move offspring away from parent plants,
- outline the mechanism of explosive, animal, water, and wind dispersal of seeds,
- define germination as the process by which seeds begin to grow,
- outline the main stages in the germination of a seed as root growth, shoot growth, and leaf/flower growth,
- state that a seed will need the right conditions to germinate: a supply of water, oxygen, and nutrients and a warm temperature.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- plants as living organisms.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- fertilization of plant gametes.
