Lesson Plan: Volume of Sound

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the link between the strength of vibrations and the volume of a sound.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the volume of a sound as how loud or quiet it is,
  • describe the link between the strength of vibrations, the energy of the vibrations, and the volume of a sound,
  • describe the link between the distance from a source and the volume of the sound,
  • compare how well sound travels through different materials,
  • interpret results from investigations into the volume of sound.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that sounds are made when objects vibrate,
  • some different sources of sounds,
  • the fact that you hear a sound when it enters your ear.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the terms amplitude and wave,
  • measuring the volume of sound in decibels,
  • pitch.
