Lesson Plan: Elastic Potential Energy Physics • 9th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the elastic potential energy stored in springs that are not at their equilibrium length.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use the following formula in all combinations: change in elastic potential energy of a spring = 12× spring constant × (change in length from equilibrium length).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • Hooke’s law,
  • the formula work done = force × distance moved in direction of force.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • oscillations of springs.
