Objectives
Students will be able to
- add whole numbers with up to six digits using the formal algorithm,
- estimate to check the reasonableness of answers,
- mentally add whole numbers,
- choose appropriate methods to add numbers.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- representing word problems using bar models,
- using the formal algorithm to add whole numbers with up to five digits.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- adding decimal numbers,
- using subtraction to solve missing number problems or to check answers.
