Lesson Plan: Similarity of Triangles Mathematics • 8th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine and prove whether two triangles are similar using equality of corresponding angles or proportionality of corresponding sides and how to use similarity to find unknown lengths and angles.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify and prove the similarity of two triangles due to two pairs of corresponding angles equal in measure,
  • identify and prove the similarity of two triangles due to corresponding sides having the same proportion,
  • write the similarity statements of two similar triangles,
  • use the similarity of two triangles to find unknown angles, unknown lengths, and perimeters.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the angle sum of a triangle.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • formal names for conditions of similarity of triangles (SSS, AA, and SAS).
