Lesson Plan: Hydrocarbons Chemistry

This lesson plan includes the objectives of the lesson teaching students how to identify and name simple hydrocarbons and represent them using different types of formulas.

Students will be able to

  • describe a hydrocarbon using examples of differently named alkanes,
  • illustrate different simple organic molecules using molecular, condensed, structural, and displayed formulas,
  • explain why there is a need for multiple ways to express the same chemical using a different formula.
