Lesson Plan: Relativistic Momentum

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the relativistic momentum of massive objects moving relative to an observer.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use 𝑝=𝛾𝑚𝑣 in all permutations,
  • use units of 𝑒𝑉𝑐 for masses,
  • interpret graphs of 𝑝𝑐 against 𝛽.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • inertial reference frames,
  • Einstein’s postulates,
  • the Lorentz factor.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • length contraction,
  • time dilation,
  • velocity transformations,
  • coordinate transforms,
  • metrics,
  • intervals,
  • the relativistic Doppler effect,
  • relativistic energy,
  • mass–energy equivalence.
