Lesson Plan: Thirds Mathematics • 2nd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide shapes into three equal parts, name each part as one-third of the whole, and know how many thirds make a whole.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • divide circles, squares, and rectangles into three equal parts and identify each part as a third,
  • tell how many thirds make a whole,
  • understand that decomposing circles, squares, and rectangles into thirds makes smaller shares.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • identifying halves and quarters (fourths),
  • dividing two-dimensional shapes into equal parts.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • fraction notation.
