Lesson Plan: Changes in State: Solids and Liquids
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to measure, compare, and observe the changes in the state of common solids and liquids.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand that the temperatures of different substances can be measured in degrees Celsius using a thermometer,
- understand that some substances are solid at room temperature while others are not,
- understand that different substances change from solid to liquid and from liquid to solid at different temperatures,
- understand that the point at which a substance changes from a solid to liquid is called the melting point,
- understand that the point at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid is called the freezing point.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas,
- the changes in the state of matter that result from heating or cooling substances,
- the specific states of water: ice, water vapor, and water,
- reading and using a thermometer.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- boiling points,
- evaporation and condensation.
