Lesson Plan: Standard Deviation of a Data Set Mathematics • 9th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find and interpret the standard deviation from a given data set.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand what a measure of dispersion means and recall the formula for the standard deviation,
  • calculate the standard deviation from a list of data,
  • calculate the standard deviation from a frequency table,
  • calculate the standard deviation from a grouped frequency table,
  • use the measure of dispersion to make judgements about data.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the mean and range of a data set,
  • methods for collecting and displaying data such as frequency tables,
  • summation notation.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • variance of a data set,
  • the standard deviation or variance of discrete or continuous random variables,
  • calculating sample variance or sample standard deviation.
