Lesson Plan: Scientific Investigations

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to formulate a measurable question and conduct a reliable investigation.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • formulate a measurable question by making observations on a picture,
  • differentiate measurable questions from nonmeasurable questions,
  • describe and list the steps of a reliable investigation,
  • predict the results of an investigation,
  • record data in an investigation,
  • define the term reliable and describe how it relates to an investigation.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • making observations and asking questions about the world around them,
  • measuring distance using a ruler and measuring tape,
  • measuring time,
  • measuring mass.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • representing and interpreting data,
  • using data to make conclusions about the results of an investigation,
  • the scientific method.
