Lesson Plan: Sharing Equally Mathematics • 1st Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to share objects fairly between a number of groups.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use objects to model sharing equally,
- share objects into a given number of equal groups and then count the number in each group,
- understand that some numbers of objects will not share into specific numbers of groups,
- use the word “divide” to describe sharing equally.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- dividing by making equal groups of a given number,
- adding single-digit numbers,
- counting in 2s (to 20), 5s (to 50), and 10s (to 100).
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- using arrays to identify equal groups of objects,
- using or recognizing the symbol,
- applying times tables facts,
- reading or writing division expressions.
