Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use objects to model sharing equally,
  • share objects into a given number of equal groups and then count the number in each group,
  • understand that some numbers of objects will not share into specific numbers of groups,
  • use the word “divide” to describe sharing equally.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • dividing by making equal groups of a given number,
  • adding single-digit numbers,
  • counting in 2s (to 20), 5s (to 50), and 10s (to 100).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using arrays to identify equal groups of objects,
  • using or recognizing the ÷ symbol,
  • applying times tables facts,
  • reading or writing division expressions.
