Lesson Plan: Measuring Lengths Physics • First Year of Secondary School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to correctly use rulers and other instruments to measure lengths.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- state which objects or instruments can be used to accurately measure lengths (a ruler and a micrometer),
- use a ruler correctly to measure lengths,
- identify when and how a ruler has been used incorrectly to measure a length,
- recognize that a ruler on its own can be used to measure straight lines but not curved ones.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- adding and subtracting integers,
- adding and subtracting decimals.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- instruments other than a ruler and a micrometer,
- measuring lengths greater than a few meters,
- measuring lengths smaller than a few millimeters,
- measuring other quantities,
- trigonometry,
- measuring the lengths of curved paths with string,
- calculating the circumference of common shapes,
- conversion between length units,
- nonmetric length units.
