Lesson Plan: Solutions Science • 5th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define a solution and describe solubility as it relates to different substances.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • explain what happens during dissolving,
  • define terms such as soluble, insoluble, solute, solvent, solution, and solubility,
  • identify the solute and solvent in different solutions,
  • compare the solubility of different substances.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the names of the states of matter and changes of state,
  • how to form mixtures.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • details of what is happening to particles during dissolving,
  • saturation of solutions.
