Lesson Plan: States of Matter Science • 2nd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define, identify, and describe the three states of matter.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define matter,
- identify the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas,
- describe solids as having a fixed size and shape,
- describe liquids as having no fixed shape,
- describe gases as having no fixed size or shape,
- classify different substances as solids, liquids, or gases.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- identifying and naming a variety of everyday materials.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- changes between states of matter,
- plasma,
- the arrangement of particles in each state of matter.
