Lesson Plan: Determinant of a Triangular Matrix Mathematics • First Year of Secondary School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the determinant of a triangular matrix.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that the determinant of a matrix with a row or column of zeros is also equal to zero,
- find the determinant of a triangular matrix by taking the product of the elements on the diagonal.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the definition of a triangular matrix,
- the difference between upper and lower triangular matrices,
- finding determinants,
- finding determinants.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- determinants of and higher-dimensional matrices,
- properties of determinants relating to
- multiplying a determinant by a scalar,
- determinants of the transposes of matrices,
- determinants of the products of matrices,
- using determinants to calculate areas.
