This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the determinant of a triangular matrix.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that the determinant of a matrix with a row or column of zeros is also equal to zero,
  • find the determinant of a triangular matrix by taking the product of the elements on the diagonal.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the definition of a triangular matrix,
  • the difference between upper and lower triangular matrices,
  • finding 2×2 determinants,
  • finding 3×3 determinants.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • determinants of 4×4 and higher-dimensional matrices,
  • properties of determinants relating to
    • multiplying a determinant by a scalar,
    • determinants of the transposes of matrices,
    • determinants of the products of matrices,
  • using determinants to calculate areas.
