Lesson Plan: The Engineering Design Process and Energy

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the engineering design process and use it to solve problems related to energy use.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the steps of the engineering design process: defining, developing, and optimizing solutions,
  • explain when the engineering design process ends,
  • use the terms constraint, criteria, and prototype,
  • use the engineering design process to solve a problem linked to energy use.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the general concept of the engineering design process,
  • energy use,
  • negative impacts of energy production and use on the environment,
  • renewable and nonrenewable energy resources,
  • conservation.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the scientific method.
