Lesson Plan: Vectors: Geometric Approach Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define and write vectors and the geometric interpretation of basic vector operations.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand what a vector is and how it can be defined in terms of its initial and terminal points,
- understand, graphically and in vector notation, the concepts
- equivalent vectors,
- vectors in the opposite direction,
- the zero vector,
- scalar multiples of vectors,
- understand how to add or subtract vectors using the triangle and parallelogram laws,
- write the vector between two points in terms of other vectors given
- a diagram of the shape,
- a description of the shape,
- write vectors given as the midpoints or ratios of line segments in terms of other vectors.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- midpoints and ratios of line segments.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- vectors given in terms of fundamental unit vectors or coordinates,
- perpendicular vectors,
- finding the magnitude of a vector,
- 3D vectors.
