Lesson Plan: Earth’s Resources Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe mankind’s influence on the Earth’s resources and compare finite and renewable fuels.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- list different uses for the Earth’s resources,
- highlight areas where synthetic products have replaced natural goods,
- assess the finite and renewable nature of goods in the context of sustainability,
- compare the advantages and disadvantages of biofuels as compared to fossil fuels.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- common fuels and energy sources,
- crude oil as the main prerequisite for organic chemicals,
- the importance of fuels to our society.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- differences between different types of biofuels and their manufacture,
- the processes of metal extraction, limestone quarrying, and crude oil fractional distillation.
