Objectives

Students will be able to

  • model the addition of numbers within 20 on a number line,
  • write addition equations matching number lines,
  • use a number line to count on and find a sum within 20,
  • count on from either addend using a number line and express a preference,
  • identify the largest number in an addition sentence and count on from there on a number line to find the sum.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • counting to 20,
  • counting objects to 20,
  • reading and writing numbers to 20,
  • adding numbers up to 10 by counting on.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • adding numbers with a sum greater than 20,
  • adding by making 10.
