Lesson Plan: Estimating Products: Decimals by Whole Numbers Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use rounding and compatible numbers to estimate the product of a number up to 1,000 with up to 2 decimal places and a whole number between 2 and 100.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- estimate the product of a decimal and a whole number by rounding to the nearest whole number,
- estimate the product of a decimal and a whole number by rounding to the greatest place value,
- estimate the product of a decimal and a whole number by using compatible numbers.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- estimating products of whole numbers,
- multiplying decimals by whole numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- estimating the product of two decimal numbers,
- calculating actual products.
